What is Contrology?
Pilates is Contrology
So what exactly is Pilates?
The Pilates Method was originally termed the “Art of Contrology”. It is a system of movement exercises created and developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s utilizing his specially designed equipment to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. Pilates focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. Every exercise in Pilates is considered to be a full-body involved exercise. In practicing Pilates you will develop strength, flexibility and control within your body.
"Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.” - Joseph Pilates
Mr. Pilates called it Contrology
In the literal sense Contrology is the mastery of your mind over the complete control of your body. In his book Return to Life, Pilates stated that Contrology means to be “kinesiologically proper, physiologically sound and psychologically correct”. His work was intended to develop not only the muscles of the body, limbs, vital organs and endocrine glands; it also clarifies the mind and develops the will through concentration, centering and control. Mr. Pilates boasted Contrology as a way to restore physical fitness to our sedentary lifestyle so that we can enjoy more out of life. It is complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.
What makes practicing Pilates different?
In your Pilates practice, the focus is on uniformly developing the body and changing rehearsed, incorrect movement patterns. In Contrology we learn to will our body to do things that we thought it couldn’t do or maybe even forgot how to do. This is why Contrology is also great for restoring brain activity. It begins with mind control over muscles. Pilates believed that our bodies should obey what we will it to do. He claimed that Contrology “reawakens dormant muscle cells which correspondingly reawakens dormant brain cells” Therefore, the culture of muscles is brain-building.
